PS5 Overheating? 9 Ways to Keep Your Console Cool

The signs your PS5 is running hot and nine simple fixes, from airflow and dust to whether a cooling stand is worth it.

The PS5 is a big console with a big cooling system, and most of the time it handles heat just fine. But when it's tucked into a tight TV cabinet, covered in dust, or running a demanding game for hours, it can get loud and hot. In the worst case you'll see a warning that the console is too hot and it may shut itself off.

The good news: most overheating problems come from a few easy-to-fix habits. Here are nine ways to keep your PS5 cool, quiet and happy.

Signs your PS5 is running too hot

  • The fan is much louder than it used to be, even in menus.
  • The air coming out of the back feels very hot.
  • Games stutter or the console freezes after a long session.
  • You see an on-screen warning that the PS5 is too hot, or the console turns off on its own.

If you get the warning, turn the console off, let it cool down and check the points below before playing again.

9 ways to keep your PS5 cool

1. Give it room to breathe

This is the big one. The PS5 pulls air in through the front and sides and pushes hot air out the back. Sony recommends leaving space around the console, roughly 10 cm (4 inches), and not putting it in a closed or tight space. A closed cabinet traps hot air and makes the console breathe its own exhaust.

2. Get it off the carpet

Carpet and rugs block intake vents and are full of dust. Put the console on a hard, flat surface or a stand.

3. Clean the dust regularly

Dust builds up in the vents over time and slowly reduces airflow. Turn the console off, unplug it and gently vacuum the vents every few months. On the original PS5 you can remove the side covers to reach the dust catchers. Never blow into the vents with your mouth, since moisture doesn't belong in there.

4. Keep it away from other heat sources

Don't stack it on top of a cable box, an amp or another console, and keep it out of direct sunlight and away from radiators.

5. Stand it upright with a stable base

The PS5 works both vertically and horizontally. Standing it upright often makes it easier to keep space around all sides and keeps it off a crowded shelf. Note that the PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro don't come with a vertical stand in the box, so you'll need one if you want to stand them up.

6. Add extra airflow with a cooling stand

A cooling stand with a fan adds airflow around the console, which helps during long sessions in warm rooms. Our PS5 Cooling Stand fits the PS5, PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro, holds the console upright and adds a cooling fan, a dual controller charging dock, a headset hook and RGB lighting. Be realistic, though: a stand helps, but it won't fix a console that's stuffed in a cabinet or clogged with dust. Fix steps 1–3 first.

7. Keep the system software up to date

Console updates can include improvements to how the system runs. Keeping your PS5 updated is an easy habit that never hurts.

8. Use rest mode sensibly

Rest mode is handy for charging controllers and downloading updates, but the console still works in the background. If the room is hot, consider turning the console fully off when you're done.

9. Cool the room, not just the console

A console can only cool itself down to the temperature of the air around it. In summer, a fan in the room or an open door makes a real difference. And for you, a mini pocket fan on the desk or around your neck keeps you comfortable during long sessions.

Is a cooling stand worth it?

If your PS5 already has plenty of space and stays quiet, you don't strictly need one. A stand makes the most sense if you:

  • play long sessions in a warm room,
  • own a PS5 Slim or Pro and want to stand it upright,
  • are tired of controllers dying because you forgot to charge them,
  • want a tidier setup with the console, controllers and headset in one spot.

The charging dock is the underrated part: drop the controllers in when you're done and they're full next time you play.

Quick answers

Is it bad to play PS5 for hours?

No, the console is designed for long sessions. Just make sure it has space around it and clean vents.

Is it better to stand the PS5 vertically or horizontally?

Both are supported. Choose the position that gives the console the most open space around its vents.

Why is my PS5 so loud?

A loud fan usually means the console is working hard to stay cool. Check for dust, blocked vents or a cramped cabinet first.
